Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made the difference. (Robert Frost – The road not taken)
The
three neighbouring comarques of La Garrotxa, Alt Empordà and Baix
Empordà are some of the best areas in Catalonia to search for orchids. With a
variety of habitats ranging from low-lying scrub to subalpine pastures, any time
from March through to the end of June is good for orchid searching. Come early
in the year for the Ophyrs hiding away in the coastal garrigue, or delay
your trip until June for a splendid variety of subalpine species, including frog
and black vanilla orchids.
We recommend a weekend's stay - enough time to find almost all of the species in flower at any one time. Mike will take you walking for two days with the emphasis on finding orchids and other plants, without forgetting all the other aspects of the region's wildlife.
Alternatively, join Mike in mid-June for the great Lady Slipper Orchid hunt: two sight records from non-experts in the last few years make us believe that this very species may be growing somewhere in La Garrotxa.
Orchid weekends:
Friday: arrive in accomodation. Meet Mike for briefing.
Saturday: guided walk
Sunday: morning guided walk, depart in afternoon.
